Hungrrr vs Flipdish: Which Restaurant Ordering Platform Should You Choose?

Hungrrr vs Flipdish: the short answer

For most restaurants, Flipdish. Both give you direct online ordering and a branded app, and on that part there isn't a lot between them. The difference is everything around the order. Flipdish also does the POS, kitchen screens, self-service kiosks, an AI agent that answers the phone, and automated marketing. Hungrrr doesn't do any of those, so if you pick Hungrrr you'll be buying the rest separately and getting it all to talk to each other.

If all you want is a website and app that take orders without a marketplace cut, Hungrrr can do that job. If you want one system running the restaurant, it can't.

What is Hungrrr?

Hungrrr is a UK company selling online ordering, branded apps and table ordering to hospitality businesses. Its pitch is mostly about getting restaurants off marketplace commission and taking orders directly.

What you get from Hungrrr:

  • an online ordering website
  • a branded mobile app
  • QR code table ordering
  • basic loyalty

That's a fair set of tools for a takeaway that already has a till it's happy with. It stops at the order, though.

What is Flipdish?

Flipdish covers ordering and the running of the restaurant behind it. The product list:

Flipdish works mainly in the UK, Ireland and Europe. Its customers range from single independents to franchise groups and operators with lots of sites.

The table is lopsided. They match on online ordering, the branded app and QR table ordering. After that it's nearly all Flipdish.

Online ordering and branded apps

This is where the two are closest. With either one, customers order through your own website or app, you pay card processing but no marketplace commission, and the customer data belongs to you.

When you put them side by side, the details are what separate them. How easy is it to set up modifiers and meal deals? What promo tools are there? How many taps does checkout take on a phone? Get a demo of both and place a test order on your own phone. That'll tell you more than any feature list, this one included.

The real split happens once the order's been placed. On Flipdish, an online order lands in the same system as counter, kiosk and phone orders. On Hungrrr, it lands in Hungrrr. You then either run a separate POS beside it or set up an integration between Hungrrr and your POS.

Table ordering

Both platforms do QR code table ordering. A customer sits down, scans the code on the table, orders and pays from their phone. Nobody has to wait to catch a server's eye, and the server isn't walking back and forth with a notepad.

The same point as above applies here. On Flipdish, a table order goes into the same queue as the counter, kiosk, phone and delivery orders, and shows up on the same kitchen screen. On Hungrrr, table orders sit in Hungrrr, and getting them in front of the kitchen alongside everything else depends on how you've set up your POS. For a pub or café doing a mix of table service and takeaway, that's worth checking carefully in a demo.

POS integration and kitchen management

This is the biggest gap between them.

Hungrrr doesn't have its own POS. A restaurant on Hungrrr either keeps online orders and counter orders apart, or sets up an integration with whatever POS it already uses.

Without the integration, staff are watching two screens - a tablet for online orders and a till for walk-ins. On a quiet Tuesday that's fine. On a Friday at 7pm, with the tablet pinging and a queue at the counter, it's how orders get missed or made twice. Reporting suffers too. To see what you sold last week you pull numbers from two places and add them up yourself.

An integration fixes some of this, but it's one more thing to set up and one more thing that can break. And when orders stop coming through at 6:30 on a Saturday, you want to know straight away whose problem it is. With two vendors involved, that isn't always clear.

Flipdish's POS system is part of the same platform as the ordering. Counter, online, kiosk and phone orders all go into one queue. The kitchen display system gets tickets from every channel, so the kitchen works off one screen. Reports cover the whole business without anyone touching a spreadsheet.

For one busy site, that's a lot less hassle. For a group with ten sites, it's the difference between ten integrations to keep alive and none.

Self-service kiosks

Flipdish sells self-service kiosks for counter-service restaurants. Customers order and pay at the screen, the queue moves faster, and counter staff can go and do something else - pack bags, run food, clean down.

Kiosks also push average order value up, because the kiosk offers the upsell and add-ons on every order. A person at the till at the end of a long shift forgets to ask about the large fries. The kiosk doesn't forget.

Hungrrr doesn't offer kiosks. No hardware, no software.

If you run a QSR or fast-casual place with a lunchtime queue, that's a big hole. If you run a sit-down restaurant, you probably don't care.

AI phone ordering

Flipdish's AI phone agent picks up incoming calls, takes the order and answers the routine questions customers ring about. Nobody on staff has to pick up.

If you're a takeaway that still gets a steady stream of phone orders, you'll know the problem. Every call at peak time pulls someone off the line or the counter. Orders taken over the phone in a loud kitchen get misheard and written down wrong. With the AI agent, the call gets answered and the order goes straight into the system, same as an online order.

Hungrrr has nothing like it.

Marketing and customer engagement

Both platforms collect customer data from direct orders. What matters is what happens to it next.

A customer list sitting in a database doesn't bring anyone back. Something has to send the messages. Flipdish's AI marketing tools run campaigns automatically based on how customers behave. Someone who hasn't ordered in a while gets a win-back message. High-value regulars get offers. On a slow night, a time-limited promo can go out. Nobody has to sit down and build those campaigns by hand.

Hungrrr has basic loyalty features. It doesn't have anything close to this kind of automation.

Multi-location and enterprise

Flipdish is used by some of the largest restaurant groups and franchise operations in the UK and Ireland. It handles central menu management, so a price change or a new item goes out to every site at once. Reporting covers dozens of locations in one place, and customers get the same ordering experience whichever branch they order from.

Hungrrr works more with smaller operators than with large groups, and its multi-location tools are more limited.

One site and no plans for a second? Skip this section. At three sites and aiming for ten, it matters more than almost anything else here.

Pricing

Both price by number of locations and which features you take. Neither publishes a full price list.

Comparing the ordering fee on its own won't tell you much. A Hungrrr quote covers ordering. You'll still need a POS, possibly kitchen screens, something for marketing, and either a person or another tool to deal with the phones. Add all that up. On Flipdish it comes from one vendor, and the total often works out the same or lower.

When you ask Flipdish for a quote, give them the whole picture - number of sites, whether you want kiosks, roughly how many phone orders you take - not just the ordering piece. Do the same with Hungrrr and whoever would supply your POS. Then compare the totals, not the headline fees.

Questions worth asking in a demo

Sales demos always look smooth. These questions get closer to what daily use is like:

  • Where does an online order show up in the kitchen, and how does the kitchen mark it as done?
  • If I keep my current POS, who supports the integration when it stops working?
  • Can I change a price across every site in one go?
  • How do I refund an online order, and how many steps does it take?
  • Who builds the menu when we go live - me or you?
  • What's in the quote, and what's extra? Hardware, card readers, kiosks?
  • What does the end-of-day report actually show, and does it include every channel?

If you're already on Hungrrr and looking for an alternative, add a couple more. Ask how existing app customers move across to the new app, and what happens to any loyalty balances. Ask whether your customer data can be imported.

Which should you choose?

Go with Flipdish if:

  • you want one platform for POS, ordering, apps, kiosks and marketing
  • you run a QSR, takeaway, fast-casual or multi-site business
  • you want AI phone ordering and marketing that runs without you
  • you're planning to open more sites

Hungrrr is worth a look if:

  • you're a small independent with simple needs
  • you already have a POS and want to keep it
  • online ordering and a basic app are genuinely all you need

For most restaurants that want to grow and keep more margin, Flipdish does more than Hungrrr. Hungrrr covers the ordering. Flipdish connects the order to the kitchen, the POS, customer marketing and the phone, so there's one system to run instead of several stitched together.
